» Why We Help

Gerry Laidlaw founded the Green Tara Foundation in 1997 after witnessing the appalling conditions of the Tibetan people residing in Nepal. New refugees in Nepal who have fled Tibet because of persecution are sent to the Tibetan Reception Center in Kathmandu, which is administered by the United Nations.  There, the refugees may wait for weeks to months while waiting to be given asylum in India.  Because of the hazardous conditions they must endure while fleeing Tibet, many arrive with medical problems such as frostbite, dehydration, malnutrition, gun shot wounds, tuberculosis, gastrointestinal infections and other wounds.  The Reception Center is often crowded with hundreds of people sleeping in the same room.  The Green Tara Foundation donates bedding, furniture, clothing, food and medical supplies to this facility.

Two of the most remote Nepali Tibetan refugee communities are Jampaling, located in the transition zone between the Himalayas and the jungle of southern Nepal, and Manang, located high in the Himalayan mountain range.  Both have permanent housing for refugees, but scarce medical resources and few economic opportunities.

Jampaling is composed of families of the former Tibetan Freedom Fighters who fought to regain Tibetan independence until the Dalai Lama asked them to lay down their arms.  They are living peacefully alongside the Nepalis, despite Nepal’s civil war.  Manang is another Tibetan community that is located close to the Tibetan border.  Both communities have primary schools attended by Tibetan children who are sent by their families from around the country.  Other Tibetan Refugee communities in Nepal that receive assistance from our organization are Boudha, Jawalakhel, Paljorling, Tashiling, Tashigang, and Tashipalkhiel.

Please support the Green Tara Foundation by donating here.

The Green Tara Foundation dedicates 100% of your donations to provide assistance in the areas of medical care, and educational scholarships to Tibetan refugees living Nepal in an effort to increase their opportunities to become self-sufficient and aid in the development of their countrymen
